Your Guide to Snowmobiling in the Arctic
Next to husky sledging, snowmobiling is one of the most popular activities we offer with our tours. Snowmobiling in the arctic is a hugely popular activity and all you’ll need to participate is your driving licence. If you don’t have a driving licence, don’t worry – you can still ride as a passenger or even on a sled behind the driver as appropriate.
If you’re wondering what boots to wear for snowmobiling, we make that really easy as we can provide them for you, same if you’re wondering what to wear snowmobiling – again, don’t worry. All our tours include thermal arctic clothing as standard which you can wear over your regular clothing. Just be sure to take lots of socks to keep your feet warm! Alongside your thermals, you’ll be given some snowmobile gloves and of course a helmet – just in case!
So, what is snowmobiling like? It’s quite hard to describe – it’s a combination of jet-skiing, quad biking and motorcycle riding on snow! Our tours all start with an introduction to the snowmobile so you can get to grips with how it works and operate it safely.
Snowmobiling isn’t a peaceful activity – be prepared for lot’s of noise and lots of fun. You’ll cover a lot of ground too – our guides will take you out into the wilderness to explore. Depending on your tour you may stop for a light snack and coffee or, if you’re looking for the Northern Lights on snowmobile – your tour may also include dinner.
Depending on where you’re staying, depends on which route you’ll take as all of the locations have different snowmobile trails depending on the conditions locally. If you’re staying in our Northern Lights Lodge for example, Johan or his team will be your guide and will take you out into the wilderness and even to race across the Torne river when it’s thick enough to do so.
The route you take will depend on the time of year – for example, if you’re travelling earlier in the season, when the snow has just started to fall and the rivers just started to freeze – it may not be safe to do certain trails on a snowmobile and you may instead use a quad bike or similar instead. As the winter really sets in and the river ice thickens and the snow continues to fall, you can have great fun in the snowy winter wonderland – riding out with your guide into the wilderness.
