What Causes the Northern Lights / Polar Lights?
Particles, most often electrons, accelerate inside the magnetosphere of the Earth and then crash into its atmosphere. The different colours of the Northern Lights signify particles colliding with other components of the atmosphere at different distances from the Earth’s surface.
Typically, the Northern Lights occur in the ‘aurora zone’ which is between 65° and 72° north but can be seen over a wider area.
