What our Arctic travellers say

Lapland Highlights

When Is The Best Time To Visit Lapland?

There is no best time to visit Lapland, as different seasons of the year offer a different experience! When Lapland’s snowy landscapes begin to melt in April, May and June, this melting period only reveals more beauty. This is a perfect time to visit the rivers and lakes, lagoons and creeks that Lapland has to offer. Visitors also get a clearer view of Lapland’s beautiful silver birch trees.

However, as we at Arctic Direct well know, many visitors seek out Lapland with the hope of experiencing a scenic wonderland of ice and snow. For dark skies and lush snowfall, we recommend visiting between the months of November and March. At this time, Finnish winter is in full swing! Whilst the temperatures here are colder than what you might experience in the summer months of July or August, travellers from afar have a chance to encounter the unforgettable.

Watch the Aurora Borealis illuminate the darkness, spend time with our wonderful huskies sledding, give winter sports like skiing a go: there is so much to do in Lapland, even when the sun no longer shines as high in the sky!

Here at Arctic Direct we also offer Christmas holidays in Lapland! Check them out!

What Is The Climate Like In Lapland?

Lapland is located in the Arctic Peninsula. As such, Lapland has a subarctic climate! From a subarctic climate, visitors to Lapland should expect long, cold winters and short, warm summers. Long stretches of dark night are common for most of the year, but even then, visitors can look forward to the pastel beauty of Lapland’s Polar Night.

To put Lappish temperatures in perspective, the temperature in November averages at around -6°C. Don’t forget to wrap up warm!

This may be surprising to some Lapland visitors, but – in the summery and bright months of July and August – temperatures can reach 20°C. This is exactly what you’d expect from a country in western Europe, for example.

How do you get around in Lapland?

There are many fun modes of transportation in Lapland, that visitors may have never experienced before. Electric vehicles are also quite common, as are taxi services. Trains are also available to go to the Finnish Lapland.

On the more unusual side, visitors could try travelling via snowmobile, dogsled, reindeer sleigh or skiing!

Why visit Lapland

There are enough great reasons to visit Lapland for a holiday that we couldn’t possibly list them all! Nevertheless, if you are looking for reasons to visit Lapland, here are just four you should consider:

  • The wintertime – Lappish winter should not deter you from visiting at all. Instead, it should encourage you! With crunchy snow underfoot, snow angels all around you, stars shining in the sky – as long as you have appropriate clothes, wintertime in Lapland is an unmissable sight.
  • The activities – Lapland offers an array of fun-filled activities for guests to enjoy. Snowmobiling, sledding, skiing, reindeer sleighs and husky safaris – whatever activity you choose, boundless fun is guaranteed.
  • The Northern Lights – A once-in-a-lifetime experience, seeing the Northern Lights in Lapland is irreplaceable. Lapland is one of the best places in the world to see this amazing phenomenon, and whilst you can’t control whether the Aurora Borealis actually appears, the chance of seeing it at all is one major reason why paying Lapland a visit is a great idea!
  • Lappish culture – Lapland is awash in vibrant culture, the home of the native Sámi people. With these people having lived in the area for over 3,500 years, we highly recommend visiting Lapland for new insight into this established, wonderful indigenous culture. In particular, the wonderful Rovaniemi museums of Arktikum and Pike shed enormous light into the diverse life and culture of the Lapland region.
