Svalbard Winter Polar Night

Svalbard is the most northerly inhabited place on earth, known for its remote terrain of glaciers, frozen tundra, and sheltering polar bears.
Interestingly, Svalbard is classified as an Arctic desert. This is due to its low humidity, and precipitation.

Not to mention, it is a very popular destination to experience true Svalbard winter polar night. With true darkness throughout November, December, and January, it is one of the only places on our planet where the Northern Lights can be seen at any time of the day.

So rather than having a Northern Lights tour in the evening, this means that you can take a Northern lights dogsled tour at lunchtime, have a chance of seeing the Aurora late afternoon, then head back to the hotel for your dinner and a relaxing evening.

  • Longyearbyen in a nutshell tour – Learn about the world’s most Northerly town with a tour including Information on the mines, the seed vault – a project to store seeds from around the world in case of natural or man-made disaster, the history of the town and much more.

  • Ice cave hike Inside the Svalbard glaciers is an underground world of tunnels and grottos carved out by the summer melting water.  Inside this world of ice, you will walk in the passages and study the yearly changing ice formations and crystals. There is a beautiful 2-hour hike to the cave entrance where guests are equipped with helmets, crampons and lights before entering the cave and experiencing the inside of a glacier. It is possible to see the Northern lights during the hike.
  • Night in Funken Lodge
Day 4
  • Breakfast
  • Dogsledding in the polar night. November to January is a spectacular time to see the Northern Lights. Svalbard is so far north that the Northern lights most often appear to the south of the islands, but technically Svalbard is a desert meaning there is very little precipitation. This maximizes the chances to see the Northern Lights as the skies are regularly cloud free. If the snow is thick enough, then the sledges head into the beautiful Bolten valley. If there is less snow then the dogs pull carts to the Advent valley. Away from the town the Northern Lights chances increase with no light pollution. After the tour there is time for a hot drink and to learn more on the Greenland dog/husky mixes used by the kennels.
  • Camp Barentz – Svalbard is rightly proud of their gastronomy. This trip travels out to the Advent valley where the camp is protected by Breinosa mountain. The guides explain the history of the area where Wilen Barentz spent the winter in 1596. There is often Svalbard reindeer in the area, shorter and stockier than their mainland cousins. There can also be ptarmigan and foxes seen from the camp. In a cozy wooden cabin, drinks and bidos (traditional reindeer stew) are served with coffee and dessert, whilst monitoring the sky for the Northern lights.
Day 5
  • Breakfast
  • Airport transfer
  • Return flights via Oslo
