An excellent alternative to the Ice Hotel in Sweden, the Alta Ice Hotel is the worlds most northern Igloo Hotel! First built in 2000, each year the designers change how it is built and designed. Indeed all exterior and interior is made of snow and ice; the rooms, the beds and even the glasses in the bar!
While temperatures inside the ice hotel remain constant between minus 4 and minus 7, you’ll stay warm in the thermal suits and sleeping bags provided. Altogether the hotel has approximately 30 rooms, ice suites, ice gallery, and ice-chapel.

Ice hotels, as the name suggests, are composed of snow (snice) where they use a waser to create a loose snow ice mixture as a building material. Specifically, your room and bed are mostly made of ice, but the latter will of course have thick sleeping bags and pillows on top of it so that you are not directly sleeping on ice. You can expect an ice bar where you can sip vodka or whisky on the rocks as you enjoy the luxurious and tranquil atmosphere of the ice hotel.
In terms of toilet or bathrooms and luggage storage, these are typically available in another facility that is modern and an accompaniment to the ice hotel, so you can rest assured that not everything will be made of ice. There will be heated areas as well to help you warm up if your body temperature starts falling.
Ice hotels have become increasingly popular as part of Arctic holiday experiences with majestic interiors that are simply unbelievable. As the temperatures are cold to help maintain the structure of the ice hotel, it would be a good idea to fully prepare yourself with the appropriate clothing to keep you warm during your stay at the ice hotel.
Norway is an idyllic country, wherein its natural beauty can be seen in both city centres and rural towns. Experience raw nature with Arctic Direct’s holiday packages that include snorkelling with orcas in Norway, the village of Andenes, exploring the Norwegian fjords and hiking one of Norway’s breath-taking cliffs, Trolltunga.
As mentioned above, although temperatures inside the hotel do not usually fall into sub-Arctic conditions, the climate is also not exactly that of a tropical summer, therefore, it would be wise to wear thick layers of clothing and jackets when staying in an ice hotel. Gloves, scarves, hats, and thick boots are also welcome. It is recommended to wear thick clothing pieces even during the night, you may benefit from bringing thick socks and thermal bases that act as underlayers to help retain heat and keep you warm throughout the evening.
