Package Overview

Become an explorer and search for the Iceland Northern Lights in our Iceland Explorer package. Over the last 5 years from 85% of guests on this tour have seen the Northern Lights (this can vary depending on time of year and how late guests stay up!) peaking at 98%!

The Iceland Northern Lights tour covers much of the West and South coasts of Iceland, keeping away from the light pollution of the city and 6 opportunities to search for the Aurora in the best possible locations. Included with the sightseeing is tips on seeing the aurora, how to take pictures, presentations and lectures.

Package Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival
  • Flight to Reykjavik (Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh, York or Bristol)
  • Airport shuttle to hotel
  • Check in and evening at leisure
Day 2 – Reykjavik and the Saga Valley
  • Breakfast and check out
  • Meet the rest of your group and board the bus for a tour or the highlights of Reykjavik. After our city tour we travel to the Saga valley – known for its involvement in the Viking Sagas.
  • We visit a volcano crater and Barnafoss (children’s falls ) and Hraunfossar, the lava falls, as well as Europe’s most powerful hot spring; Deildartunguhver, which produces 180 litres of water per second at 97° Celsius.
  • We check into our hotel for the next 2 nights and finish the evening with a lecture on the Northern Lights before heading outside to look for them.
Day 3 – Snaefellsness
  • After breakfast we head further North to explore the Snaefellsness peninsular.
  • We take a fjord cruise and visit a fishing village if the weather is kind. On our journey back our guide gives an informal talk on how best to photograph the Northern lights.
  • Back at the hotel we head out side to the garden or hot tub to wait and see if the Northern Lights appear
Day 4 – Golden Circle
  • Today we head back South as we cover some of Iceland’s most famous sights as part of the Golden Circle.
  • We stop at an Icelandic wool factory before heading the Thingvellir National park – home to Alpingi. the World’s oldest parliament from 930 AD and the place where the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia meet.
  • See the geothermal spouting geyser of Strokkur which can spout boiling water up to 30 metres high at intervals of 5 – 8 minutes.
  • We also visit Gullfoss – the Golden Falls which fall 34 metres in 2 drops. After our Golden Circle tour we head south seeing the geothermal greenhouses that allow Iceland to grow much of its vegetables and learn more about Icelandic horses with a farm visit.
  • We spend the night in a guesthouse near the South Coast where we can relax in the hot tub and look for the Northern Lights.
Day 5 – South Coast
  • Our goal for the day is East as we move along route 1 taking in sights from the South.
  • We visit the Eyjafjallajokull visitor centre and learn more about the eruption that ground air traffic across Europe to a halt in 2010.
  • From there we visit Skogafoss waterfall and the Skogar museum which features traditional turf houses and insights into Iceland’s rich past.
  • In the afternoon we reach the Vatnajokul area and will walk on a black sand beach.
  • The Vatnajokul area has minimal light pollution and is perfect to see the Northern Lights.
Day 6 – Vatnajokull
  • Always a favourite, today we visit the Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon where we can witness the icebergs as they make their way to sea. Under the bridge is a wonderful black sand beach which looks magnificent with icebergs of various sizes washed onto it.
  • We visit the village of Hof and enjoy a film on the Northern Lights. In the evening we wait and see if the Aurora grace us with their presence.
  • NB. 15 Nov – 15 Mar it is possible to add an Ice cave tour in addition to the Lagoon visit. Approx £200pp
Day 7 – Vik and the Blue lagoon
  • Heading back along the South Coast today’s stops include the village of Vik with its dramatic black sand coastline and also the magnificent waterfall Seljalandsfoss.
  • We check back into our Reykjavik hotel before an evening visit to the Blue Lagoon and a goodbye dinner before an evening Northern Lights tour before returning tour hotel around midnight
Day 8 – Depart
  • Breakfast and morning in Reykjavik followed by a shuttle transfer to the airport based on your flight time.
