For guests visiting Sweden, perhaps who have a stay at the Ice Hotel or who are in one of our many lodges such as Camp Ripan, Arctic Eden or Mattarakka, there are a number of tips and tricks which will help to make your stay in the arctic more enjoyable. The travel advice below is relevant to many of our tours however may differ for some of our more specialist arctic tours. If you are not sure, please ask your sales representative on booking.
Useful tips
- Currency – Krona (SEK).
- Norwegian Airlines luggage allowance is 20kg + 8kg hold per person
- Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) luggage allowance is 23kg + 8kg hold per person.
- Any liquids must meet the current security guidelines. Duty free can be taken when it is sealed according to current regulations.
- Please ensure you are ready and waiting in the appropriate place for activities and transfers. Guides will not come to look for you. Guides will pick up from outside reception.
- Transfers in Stockholm are not included. For best value we recommend a taxi from the terminal to your hotel (fixed fee) and back on departure (your hotel can call a taxi for you for the return journey).
- We recommend you double check activity times on arrival – you may be given a local itinerary on arrival.
- We highly recommend acting like a native and washing in the evening before bed (traditionally done with warm water in the sauna) and refraining from washing/showering in the morning. If you wash in the morning you will remove your skin’s natural protection and be more prone to dry/chapped/sore skin.
Dressing for a cold climate
- Inner layer – A set of thermal underwear (including long johns) made from synthetics, wool or a woollen mixture. Avoid cotton as this becomes cold when wet. Woollen socks. Plan to wear 2 pairs of socks.
- Middle layer – Woollen sweater/shirt, fleece or thermal jumper
- Outer layer – A coat of down or thick manmade material, thick trousers and a waterproof layer.
- Hats, gloves, shoes – You will need to take a hat which covers your ears and a thick woollen scarf to protect your neck. Gloves should ideally be wind and waterproof, with maybe an extra pair as a liner. Shoes should be waterproof with deep soles and good grip –these will be required when transferring between accommodations. If possible they should be larger than a normal shoe, in order to leave space for socks and an insulating layer of air inside.
