The North Pole is one of the Arctic’s most well-known destinations, which is no surprise as there are plenty reasons to visit the winter wonderland and experience a North Pole holiday.

It is home of Santa Claus, the North Poles most famous occupant and offers endless opportunities to see the amazing wildlife in their natural environment.

For those who wish to explore and discover incredible scenery, encounter traditional culture, and experience a real adventure with exciting activities, North Pole holidays will give you a trip to exceed your wildest expectations.

Our experts have shared some of their best picks for what makes the North Pole so special, outside of the popular Christmas period.

See the Northern Lights

Arguably the most common reason why people visit the Arctic is to view the Northern Lights. And it’s easy to see why, as the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights is one of the most incredible phenomena in the world.  The Auroras are created when protons and electrons stream out from the solar surface and slam into the Earth’s magnetic field, creating the spectacular dancing waves.

Although you can never predict when the next show will appear, the Northern Lights are the most peaceful, fascinating sights you will ever see. And they are certainly on the bucket list for many adventurers, whatever their age.

Arctic Wildlife

The North Pole has created a safe place for the wildlife to live undisturbed. Travelling across vast landscapes bathed on a thick layer of ice, your Arctic dreams unfold before your eyes. The animals you’ll find at the

North Pole are polar bears, walrus, arctic fox, whales, and plenty of birds.

Observing these animals will keep you intrigued and engaged. Imagine being able to explore more about these animals by taking part in activities such as husky safaris and whale watching tours, each of which can be arranged through Arctic Direct.

Journey to the North Pole

Travelling to the North Pole is unlike anywhere else in the Arctic as reaching the world’s least visited destination is not something every traveller gets to experience. There are several routes to choose from; whatever your age, embarking on a journey through the North Pole, is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

One of the quickest routes is via the North Pole Express, but other options include travelling across the sea on a luxury expedition cruise holiday. Thrill seekers can also do the journey on foot using skis, completing the 60-mile journey in around two weeks. If you are up for a challenge, then this would be the route for you!

The best time to visit the North Pole

The best time for an Arctic holiday to the North Pole depends on where you want to go and what you want to see. If you want to catch the Northern Lights, then visiting between the months of January – mid March will give you the best chance at noticing the Aurora. If you decide to visit the North Pole during the summer and autumn, the temperatures throughout the region are more bearable, making it ideal time for exploring and observing the wildlife. Visiting in the autumn months means the return of the polar nights, so a great opportunity to experience the Northern Lights and capture the breath-taking sunsets.
