On 18th August we have celebrated National Couples Day, a day to enjoy the love between you and your partner. Although, you might be asking, ‘isn’t that what Valentines Day is for?’. Well, who does not love an additional excuse to shower your loved one with affection and get the same in return.

For this occasion, we have outlined our favourite resorts for couples who are looking for a unique winter experience full of romance.

Wilderness Hotel Nangu

This resort is for adults only, a perfect escape for those looking to unwind and spend some quality time with their partner. Nangu is based in Northern Finland, and as the name above suggests, it is surrounded by beautiful Lappish wilderness.

There are several accommodation types to choose from at Nangu. So, there are plenty of options to choose from. Examples of accommodation include; Log Cabins and Glass Aurora Huts. The Nangu Panorama Log Cabin even comes with its very own sauna as well as jacuzzi – the perfect additions to unwind at the end of a long day adventuring with your other half.

Nangu has a lovely log restaurant on site, serving traditional Lappish cuisine. The restaurant has a beautiful atmosphere, setting the mood for a romantic meal. You can also purchase romantic packages to add that extra special touch. Packages include delicacies such as chocolates, sparkling wine and cakes.

The packages to Nangu include many activities to make your stay unforgettable. Many of which increase your chances of see the Northern Lights during your trip. What is more romantic than heading out into the wintery night, the snow sparkling under the twinkling stars on the search for the elusive Aurora Borealis. The private Aurora Sledge Safari is a perfect option for this, get cosy with your loved one as you are pulled by a sled. For a romantic day time activity, you could opt for snowshoeing – this activity is led by a guide who will take you on a relaxing walk amongst the wilderness that surrounds the resort. The guide will be sharing interesting stories and facts about the Finnish nature and local animals on the way.

ICEHOTEL

As you may guess from the name, this hotel is made from ice – from the walls to the tables to the bed that you sleep on. As this hotel can get very cold – below freezing temperature in the bedrooms – it is not recommended for children under the age of 9. This makes it an ideal escape for couples who want to try something different. You have to be quick though, the hotel is built from scratch in December and by the Spring it has melted away ready to be built again the following December. This adds a further sense of uniqueness as the hotel will differ year to year. The ICEHOTEL is based in Sweden, only 11 miles from Kiruna and was the world’s first ice hotel.

It is only recommended to stay in an Ice Room for 1 night. Don’t worry though, they have warm accommodation options for the rest of your stay including Hotel Rooms and Chalets.

While staying at the ICEHOTEL why not treat you and your loved one to a special private Jukkasjärvi sauna ritual. Here you can try the sauna itself, wash with local tar soap, take an icy plunge into the Torne River or just simply unwind and relax in the outdoor heated bathtubs. Afterwards you will be able to enjoy some light finger foods and receive a diploma to remind you of your experience.

Not engaged yet, but planning it? Why not make your proposal extra special by arranging to do it at the ICEHOTEL, there are plenty of places around that would make the perfect spot to propose, with the glistening snow and surrounding forest it will create a truly magical experience for your partner.

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort is based in the North Finnish wilderness, 250km (150 miles) North of the Arctic Circle. Despite its naturalistic and wild surrounding it is only a 30-minute transfer from Ivalo airport so very accessible. Kakslauttanen are the original founders of the Glass Igloos which have become a part of many people’s bucket list. The resort also has several restaurants that serve Laplandic specialities such as reindeer and char-grilled salmon.

Although Kakslauttanen is very family friendly, it still makes the perfect destination for a romantic couple’s getaway. With a broad range of accommodation to choose from – including their famous Glass Igloos – Kakslauttanen is perfect for relaxing in the evening and star gazing. Due to the lack of light pollution chances to see the Northern Lights are enhanced. They also have Log Cabins as well as Kelo Glass Igloos which are a combination of the Glass Igloos and Log Cabins. If you and your partner deserve an extra special treat, look into one of their Queen Suites. These offer a private sauna and an outdoor jacuzzi on the terrace.

Activities here are very similar to the other resorts. If you’re looking to try something different, get yourself signed up to ride horseback through the snow covered forests and wilderness, the snow crunching below the hooves as a guide leads you. Looking for something a bit more relaxed so you can spend quality time with your partner? Try out the horse drawn sleigh ride, enjoy the crisp winter air as you get cosy beneath blankets.
