During my stay at Kakslauttanen, I got to experience some amazing activities. These include a Husky Safari, reindeer sleigh ride, horseback riding, and the snowmobile safari.
Horseback riding was the first activity of the trip. It started with a tour round the stables where our guide explained the basics of horse riding and everything we needed to know prior to getting mounted. We then followed our guide round the beautiful Finnish lakes, taking in the breath-taking scenery.
The Husky safari is the most typical thing to do in Finland and was the one excursion that I probably enjoyed the most. I underestimated the speed that the huskies transport you through the snow, it truly makes it such a thrilling experience. As part of the trip we were able to have 1-1 time with the huskies, making it that extra bit special. Our guides were able to share information about the different breeds, where they live and how well they were looked after, and the level of detail was truly impressive.
And the experience didn’t end there! The smoke sauna was a liberating way to really unwind!
Heated by log fires, it’s the perfect way to warm up in freezing temperatures. It entails an original smoke sauna, but is paired with the beautiful scenery of the white hilltop landscape.. and a refreshing ice plunge in the lake! It was a unique experience. I can fully understand why most Finns enjoy the sauna at least once a week!
One of the major reasons why many people travel to Finland is to view the Northern Lights. During our late-night Reindeer sleigh ride we were hoping to see this natural spectacle as it was the perfect conditions – no clouds in sight! Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to catch a glimpse of the Aurora. But this was most likely down to me traveling at the end of the season. So this maybe something to bear in mind when you are planning your holiday to the Arctic.
Although we couldn’t view the Northern Lights, we did enjoy some warm blueberry juice round the fire whilst having an educational talk with one of the Sami guides. Probably the warmest hearted, friendliest person I met in Finland.
As there is so much to do in Finland, I would have loved to stay an extra night or two. Viewing the Northern Lights is very much the top of my bucket list, but I would love to explore more of Finland and experience all of Kakslauttanen activities!
