A trip to Arctic Europe, a destination incorporating the Northern parts of Finland, Sweden and Norway. A place full of breath-taking landscapes and beautiful wildlife. A destination full of natural phenomena and distinct culture. Combining the fascinating history with the spectacular activities, its no wonder why people visit the region.

Whilst most people think of snow-covered mountains and observing the dancing lights, Arctic Europe is a place to visit all year round. Depending on what time of year you want to visit there is a great deal to explore.

If you like adventure during your holidays, then the wonderful thing about visiting Arctic Europe countries is that you can enjoy all the beauty in sub-zero temperatures or embrace the season of midnight sun!

From husky sledding, skiing landscapes and iconic accomodation, catching the northern lights is a popular reason people want to visit. We have package holidays to the Ice Hotel that gives you the opportunity to experience all this.

The Northern Lights in Arctic Europe

While the northern lights can be very unpredictable, the auroras require clear skies, dark conditions, and the solar cycle to be visible. From November – January, the countries will experience the most snow. Although the temperatures will be extremely cold, the number of clouds will reduce the visibility of the aurora borealis. The best conditions tend to be during September and January – mid March because by this time the nights are dark but without the cloudy skies.

If you want to make your hunt for the northern lights that little more adventurous, why not try a husky or snowmobile safari to your list of activities. Venturing through the snow to where the northern lights are most visible and enjoy the breath-taking scenes of the Arctic. You can also check out our northern light holiday packages, created to give you the best chance of seeing the aurora borealis.

Polar Night in Arctic Europe

The winter season in Arctic Europe typically starts in November and lasts until around mid-April. Winter is also where some areas in Arctic Europe experience Polar Night, a natural

phenomenon that occurs due to the earth rotating around an axis that is slightly tilted. The polar night varies from region to region and is most intense in places like Svalbard. Due to the lack of sunlight this means a higher chance of seeing the northern lights, different regions will have different advantages and disadvantages at this time, but we always plan around the daylight, or lack there of when you’re visiting.

Of course, we cannot forget one of the most popular reasons why people visit Arctic Europe countries during the winter which is to visit Lapland. Lapland is the home of Christmas, where many families dream of staying every year.

The Midnight Sun in Sweden

From June – August time, the days are longer and much warmer. One of Arctic Europe’s incredible natural phenomena, it is the perfect time to explore the fjords, rivers, and some of the country’s biggest hiking treks. The time of midnight sun is always celebrated in the Arctic by making the most of the long daylight hours. Whether that will be hiking, picking berries, or sitting round a campfire all night!

Whether you want an adventurous trip or prefer to explore the rich culture, there are many reasons why you should travel to Arctic Europe.
