Where is the best place to see the Northern Lights? Following our piece last week on the best time to see the Northern Lights this week we are looking at the second most asked question: of the best place to see the Northern Lights.
As described last week there are a number of factors that you can swing in your favour to successfully see the Northern Lights and, arguably, one of the most important is the Location and Place.
Location
By this we mean the rough area. We offer Northern Lights trips across 5 countries – Finland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Greenland. You’ll be want to be around the Polar circle as this is where the Northern lights “auroral oval” tends to be concentrated. Too far south and the Aurura are likely to not be visible. Eqully there are occasions where you can be too far North – for example did you know it is difficult to see the Northern Light from the North Pole? the Northern Lights are just too far South!
Place
At least equally important is the place. Many of our customers will come to us asking for “the best place to see the Northern Lights” and follow with a story of having been to Iceland and not having see any Northern Lights. Quite often this is because they were based in Reykjavik which, as a city of around 250,000 people inevitably generates quite a lot of light pollution. You maximise your chances with somewhere with minimal light pollution. It is also useful to be somewhere where you can see the Northern Lights directly from your accommodation rather than going on a special Northern Lights trip as it means you can check all evening rather than just during the hours and days of the activity.
