Today is Midsummer in Sweden and it’s a big deal! It’s the second biggest public holiday of the year in Sweden after Christmas – or bigger for some people. Midsummer Eve is celebrated on the Friday between 19 and 25 Jun and consists of flower garlands worn on the head, dancing around a maypole and singing songs whilst drinking snaps. It’s a day for being outside with friends and family, long, long days and the midnight sun north of the Arctic Circle. There’s plenty of pickled herring with new potatoes and sour cream to eat followed up with strawberries. Swede’s will often go to someone’s summerhouse but if you weren’t lucky enough to get an invite this year you can enjoy a virtual Midsommar by joining Visit Sweden’s Facebook live stream bringing different celbrations from across the country into your home by following this link: Visit Sweden Midsummer
There are events throughout the day starting with Midsummer wreath making and snaps flavouring at 1000, moving on a traditional lunch, dancing with traditioanl music and an outdoor swim and ending with skiing under the midnight sun at 2300 UK time.
