In these troubled times it is amazing to read how coping with COVID-19 in the Finnish way can be so inspiring internationally. Some might say that the Fins have a number of natural advantages. Not only are they the happiest nation on earth but they also pride themselves on a very special national characteristic – sisu.
What is Sisu?
Sisu is an inner strength – a steely determination to persevere and not give up. In short, just the sort of resilience that we all need at the moment.
The website for Finlandia University explains: “Sisu has a mystical, almost magical meaning. [It] is not momentary courage, but the ability to sustain that courage. It stands for the philosophy that what must be done will be done, regardless of cost.
“Sisu is an inherent characteristic of the Finnish people. You might call it backbone, spunk, stamina, guts, or drive and perseverance. It is a measure of integrity that surpasses the hardship and sees through to the end.”
Sisu isn’t just an abstract concept, there is a very practical side too. Magnus Hakenstad, from the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies calls Finland “the prepper nation of the Nordics, always ready for a major catastrophe”.
The country has a stockpile of supplies including protective masks built up over many years meaning it was better prepared than many other nations for COVID-19 (although supplies of toilet roll couldn’t quite keep up with early demand!).
